A.L. Breguet Watches History

Breguet replica watches are glad to tell you the story about one of the most prominent names in the world of horology.

Abraham-Louis Breguet was born in 1747 in Neuch?tel, Switzerland. The Breguet watch maker company was founded in 1775 by, following his marriage to the daughter of a prosperous French bourgeois; her dowry provided the "financing" which allowed him to open his own workshop.

This was the beginning of an unparalleled career, characterised by great virtuosity, scientific rigour and technical innovation, as well as by commercial daring and a great sense of human relations.

Two requirements for the further development of the workshop had been achieved: Breguet found access to the powerful and wealthy aristocracy, and proved himself to be an excelent technical genius. In short order, Breguet perfected the self-winding movement invented by Perrelet; invented shock resistance for balance bearings; and developed la repetition, a repeating pocket watch that chimed on demand.

Abraham-Louis Breguet was to make successive or simultaneous incursions into all fields of watchmaking. His career got off to a spectacular start with a series of master strokes: the development of the automatic watch, first commercialised in 1780; the invention of the gong spring which considerably reduced the width of repeater watches, followed by that of the first anti-shock device, which rendered watches less fragile and consequently more reliable.

No matter who was in power in Europe, he wore a Breguet.

At a time when Breguet's works had contributed much to the advancement of watchmaking, he was forced by the Revolution and the ensuing upheavals to momentarily abandon Paris and take refuge in Switzerland for two years. As a result, many collectors consider the only "true" Breguet to be the watches sold prior to Breguet's exile from France.

When he died in 1823 at the age of 77, everyone was unanimous in paying tribute to a figure who had revolutionised all facets of the art and science of watchmaking.

Following Breguet's death, the company changed hands several times. The "modern" chapter of the Breguet saga begins in 1970, five years prior to its 200th anniversary, when the company was bought by Parisian jewelers Jacques and Pierre Chaumet. By restoring the prestige and exclusivity associated with Breguet watches, the Chaumet brothers accomplished a minor miracle.

Modern Breguet watches, which are built by hand by the most talented Swiss watchmakers, boast hand-engraved silver dials, exquisitely finished cases with reeded edges, and of course, the famous Breguet signature.

Honoured by a prestigious clientele, it successfully weathered the major crises of the 20th century while remaining a watchmaker of reference for some of the world's eminent figures, as well as in scientific and aviation circles.

Breguet replica watches will add into the lives of their owners more quality, precision and beauty.
